Harvard-Westlake School is seeking applications for the Middle School Learning Specialist position. Our Middle School comprises approximately 750 students in grades 7–9. This is a full-time, exempt position beginning in August 2026 for the 2026–27 school year. This role guides students in grades 7–9 in cultivating effective learning habits and supports their academic growth as they transition into middle school.
Candidates should have deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and evidence-based interventions to support students with learning differences. They should also demonstrate cultural competency in their work with students, families, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders as part of the Learning Center team. This position reports to the Director of the Learning Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support & Instruction
Work closely with the Learning Center team to implement departmental and school policies and strategies
Support a targeted caseload of students within the Learning Center, focusing on academic skill development and individualized learning strategies
Hold one-on-one and small group meetings with students to strengthen executive function skills, including planning, organization, work completion, communication, and self-advocacy skills
Be present in the Learning Center during open hours for student drop-ins
Faculty & Administrative, and Program Collaboration
Collaborate closely with faculty and administrators to serve as an advocate and liaison for students and families regarding learning differences and individualized academic needs
Partner with teachers to support differentiated instruction and to foster a student-centered environment that aligns with Harvard-Westlake’s rigorous academic standards
Utilize excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to exchange accurate information in a professional and empathetic manner with families, students, faculty, staff, and outside professionals
Collaborate with the Director of the Learning Center to provide classroom, grade-level, and workshop presentations on study skills and executive function skills to students, faculty, and staff Attend all faculty meetings, student support meetings, and deans’ meetings
School Responsibilities
Assist with the administration of and preparation for final exams and placement exams
Additional duties, such as student advising and chaperoning events, as needed
May be asked to teach a course during the school year
Work with Students & Families
Interpret and translate educational evaluations, neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) into appropriate accommodations and/or recommendations in line with Harvard-Westlake’s programs and policies
Create, implement, and update Educational Plans (EPs) for students who meet Harvard-Westlake’s eligibility requirements for school-based accommodations
Serve as a case manager for students with Educational Plans (EPs), having check-ins each cycle and working closely with the Director of the Learning Center to ensure proper implementation of policies and procedures
Hold high standards of discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive student and family information
Schedule
Typically Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with events as needed.
Compensation
Anticipated base compensation for this position is $85,000–$105,000, depending on experience.
Education and Experience
Required:
Master’s degree, Board Certified Educational Therapist (BCET), Educational Therapist/Professional (ET/P) through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), valid teaching credential (mild/moderate disabilities), or related experience
Minimum of three years of experience as a learning specialist with students in middle or high school, or supporting students with diagnosed learning differences
Strong understanding of evidence-based instructional practices and strategies that promote student organization, independence, and academic success
Experience and expertise in reading and synthesizing neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Preferred:
Experience working specifically with middle school–aged students (grades 7–9)
Knowledge of current assistive technologies, neuroscience research, and differentiated instruction to support a wide range of learner
