Overview: The Mountain School at Winhall, an independent K–6 school in southern Vermont, seeks a dedicated and dynamic Upper School Math and Science Teacher to join our faculty for the 2025–26 academic year. This full-time position serves our upper school students with some combined grades. The teacher will also serve as a class advisor, supporting students' academic and social development in partnership with families and colleagues.
We are seeking an educator who embodies curiosity, clarity, and a profound commitment to upper elementary and middle school education. The successful candidate will create a classroom culture that supports active learning, cultivates problem-solving skills, and encourages scientific exploration, while maintaining high expectations and a warm, respectful tone.
School Mission: Our purpose is to establish an educational foundation of curiosity, confidence, and competence while practicing kindness to oneself, the community, and nature.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach Math and Science to students in Grades 4-6 using:
ThinkMath! as the core math curriculum
Mystery Science as the foundation for science instruction, aligned with NGSS practices.
Design and implement lessons that foster inquiry, collaboration, and connections to real-world applications and the natural world.
Serve as a class advisor, supporting students in their social, emotional, and academic development.
Collaborate closely with the Upper School humanities teacher and student support team to ensure cohesive cross-curricular instruction.
Integrate Responsive Classroom practices to support a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment.
Use the Penn Literacy Network frameworks to align with schoolwide instructional practices, including a consistent approach to lesson design, feedback, and student engagement.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Communicate regularly and clearly with families about curriculum, progress, and classroom life.
Participate fully in school life, including staff meetings, conferences, events, professional development opportunities, and community activities. Attending field trips (which may include overnight trips).
Foster an inclusive, supportive environment aligned with MSW’s mission and values.
Other Duties as assigned by the Head of School
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Math, Science, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
At least 2 years of classroom experience with upper elementary or middle school students. Knowledge of the developmental needs of students ages 9–12
Strong foundation in inquiry-based and student-centered instructional practices
Familiarity with or willingness to be trained in ThinkMath!, Mystery Science, Responsive Classroom, and the Penn Literacy Network framework
A collaborative mindset, flexibility, and a sense of humor

The Mountain School at Winhall opened in 1998 and serves students in the Winhall and Stratton communities and surrounding towns in Southern Vermont. As an independent day school serving primarily towns with non-operating schools, we serve a diverse socio-economic community with most of our students receiving town tuition. The Mountain School at Winhall is dedicated to serving as many families in our surrounding community while also maintaining an intimate, close-knit community. We serve approximately 50 students in grades K-6 and offer a complete Special Education program, STEAM program, and Health and Fitness education.
