Commonwealth School, an independent day school for grades 9-12 that occupies two brownstones in Boston’s Back Bay, is known for its rigorous academics, low (5:1) student-teacher ratio, and strong program in the arts. POSITION DESCRIPTION
We seek a part-time (.4 FTE) Mandarin teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year to teach two courses.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Teaching two of our full-credit Mandarin courses (Mandarin 1 through 5). Full-credit courses meet 4 times a week for 40 minutes per class.
Working closely with our full-time Mandarin teacher to coordinate curriculum and assessments
The annual (ten-month school year) salary for this position ranges from $34,000-$40,000, depending on relevant experience.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Firmly committed to establishing culturally responsive classrooms, we seek teachers who think independently and love learning, especially alongside high school students. Ideal candidates will be fluent in Mandarin and find joy in fostering students’ understanding and appreciation of the language and Chinese culture. Teacher certification is not required. In addition, strong candidates will demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in a diverse community and show a keen interest in collaborating with colleagues while mentoring young people.
