Big Sky Community School is an independent, nonprofit K-12 school in Big Sky, Montana, serving approximately 50 students across two divisions. We pair rigorous academics with hands-on, community-rooted experiences in one of the most extraordinary places in the country. Our 5-12th-grade students pursue demanding coursework through Aeon School's online curriculum while engaging in mentorship, independent projects, and outdoor experiences that develop leadership, curiosity, and resilience.
Big Sky Community School exists for a specific kind of student, one who refuses to choose. Our student-athletes are serious competitors and serious students, and we are built around the belief that elite athletics and rigorous academics do not have to compete with each other. They can, and should, make each other better. We are building the support structures that make that possible. BSCS students value a rigorous education that opens doors while allowing them to explore their passions.
The Opportunity
This is a real teaching role for someone with genuine depth in math and science, and the ability to diagnose gaps quickly and fill them. Our 5-12 students pursue math and science coursework through Aeon's online curriculum, but foundational gaps do not close on their own through an adaptive platform alone. That is where you come in. You will work directly with students, identify where they are stuck, intervene with precision, and push them toward mastery. You will also build the hands-on, inquiry-based science experiences and math culture that make these subjects come alive in person. This is not a supervisory role. You are a teacher who happens to work at a school that does things differently.
What You Will Do
Math Instruction & Intervention
Review student math work daily. Identify who is stuck, where the gap is, and what targeted intervention looks like.
Work directly with students who have foundational gaps, meeting them where they are and systematically building toward mastery.
Push advanced students further than the online curriculum takes them — extension problems, mathematical thinking, and genuine challenge.
Build a math culture in the 5-12 program where struggle is normal, precision matters, and students develop confidence through competence.
Coordinate with Aeon's online math teachers on student progress, gaps, and instructional priorities.
Science & Inquiry
Design and lead hands-on science experiences, labs, and experiments that bring Aeon's online science curriculum to life in person.
Build project-based science learning experiences: real questions, real data, real conclusions.
Lead January Term and Friday programming rooted in science, outdoor investigation, and inquiry.
Connect science learning to the Big Sky environment: ecology, geology, weather, and the natural systems students live in every day.
MAP Data & Gap Intervention
Review MAP math scores for every 5-12 student and use the RIT score breakdown as a precise diagnostic tool, identifying exactly where each student's thinking breaks down and building targeted interventions around it.
Track MAP growth across testing windows and adjust instructional priorities accordingly. The goal is measurable progress, not just curriculum coverage.
Communicate MAP results clearly to families and the Head of School, and provide a concrete plan to address gaps and push students to a higher level of thinking and skill development.
Student Support & Culture
Know your students: their math history, their gaps, their anxiety around the subject, and what unlocks them.
Support students through Aeon's online coursework. Help them navigate assignments, stay on track, and advocate for themselves with their online teachers.
Monitor daily progress and flag concerns early to the Head of School, to families, and to Aeon's teaching team.
Contribute to Friday programming, outdoor learning, community events, and the broader life of the school.
Pitch in on school operations as part of a small, all-hands team.
Who You Are
A mathematician and scientist with genuine subject depth. You understand the material well enough to know exactly where a student's thinking breaks down.
An experienced math teacher who can diagnose gaps quickly and intervene with precision and patience.
Someone who makes math feel accessible without making it feel easy. You hold high standards and build confidence simultaneously.
Comfortable using MAP data as a diagnostic tool. You can read a RIT score breakdown and immediately know what to work on.
Energized by hands-on science and inquiry-based learning. You want students doing science, not just reading about it.
Comfortable supporting a hybrid model. You teach some things directly and support online learning in others.
Warm, organized, and genuinely invested in each student's development as a thinker.
Energized by building something new in a small, mission-driven environment.
Comfortable with technology: Google Suite, Zoom, Apple OS, and curious/learning about AI-integrated learning.
Preferred Background
A teaching credential or equivalent experience in grades 5-12 math and science is preferred. Deep subject expertise in math, through at least pre-calculus, ideally higher, is essential. A science background in biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental science is valued. Backgrounds in independent schools, project-based programs, or inquiry-based science are a strong plus. We welcome teachers who are excited to work outside a traditional classroom structure.
Schedule & Time Off
Full-time position following the Big Sky Community School academic calendar (including both J Term periods). Approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Includes winter and spring breaks, major holidays, and paid time off.
Benefits of Joining Our Team
Big Sky Community School offers competitive compensation based on experience ($60,000-$100,000); health, dental, and vision insurance; paid time off aligned with school breaks; professional learning opportunities; and the chance to live and work in one of the most beautiful mountain communities in the country. And the rare opportunity to help build something genuinely new.
Background Check
All employment offers are contingent upon completion of fingerprinting and an FBI background check, and reference checks.
Equal Opportunity
Big Sky Community School is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates of all backgrounds and experiences.
