Millennium School is seeking a Physical Expression Guide to bring a thoughtful, integrated, and engaging approach to physical development within our middle school community. This position involves teaching physical expression and education classes to approximately 90 students in grades 6–8, four days per week.
The ideal candidate will ground their practice in core PE competencies, such as fitness, motor skills, and sport, while also incorporating less traditional modalities such as yoga, rock climbing, and outdoor education. We are looking for someone who can build a cohesive curriculum that balances structured athletic development with opportunities for self-discovery and connection to the natural world. We are seeking someone with a genuine enthusiasm for working with middle schoolers and a playful approach to teaching.
Moving forward, our program will draw from a rich spectrum of mind-body disciplines, including yoga, martial arts, capoeira, mindfulness, and somatic movement, alongside outdoor education experiences such as hiking, nature immersion, and environmental stewardship. Students are invited to explore both the physical and contemplative dimensions of movement as pathways to self-knowledge and community.
Millennium looks for educators with a progressive, embodied teaching philosophy who understand the developmental needs of middle schoolers. The ideal candidate brings deep personal practice in one or more mind-body disciplines (such as yoga, martial arts, or capoeira), a love of the outdoors and experiential learning, and a commitment to supporting students’ inner and outer growth — helping them build self-awareness, resilience, and a lifelong relationship with movement and nature.
This Guide also will lead an advisory group, and deliver regular social-emotional education to students.
About Millennium
We are a middle school (grades 6-8) in San Francisco, California. Our mission is to guide adolescents through a transformative coming-of-age journey that integrates challenging academics, real-world exploration, and self-discovery.
Essential to bringing our mission to life are the following approaches to teaching and learning:
Awareness: Presence, Personal & Professional Growth
Millennium educators are mindful and intentional in their work. They see teaching as purposeful, commit to ongoing growth, and bring creativity, responsibility, and energy to their roles. They engage in professional learning, share their skills with colleagues, and contribute actively to the life of the Millennium community.
Compassion: Connection, Environment & Engagement
Guides at Millennium embody compassion and empathy. They love working with middle schoolers in particular and are dedicated to reimagining how to best guide students through this period of development. They are committed to anti-racist practices and strive to dismantle all forms of oppression. They are open, clear, and timely communicators with students and their families, as well as our colleagues.
Wisdom: Thinking & Planning
Our Guides are not satisfied with a surface-level understanding. They know their content area and pedagogy, and are also committed to expanding their educational philosophy and vision. They consider content in the context of the diverse needs of our students, planning with the needs of all students in mind and shifting in the moment to ensure our work is relevant and responsive.
Purpose: Delivery & Assessment
Guides apply research-based best practices in our classrooms, providing engaging, relevant, developmentally appropriate, and effective learning experiences. They give all students the chance to learn by utilizing a wide range of instructional styles and technologies, and providing regular feedback and accommodations.
Who Thrives as a Millennium Guide?
According to our current team of Guides, educators who thrive at Millennium “build strong, trusting relationships and create spaces where students feel safe to take risks, slow down, and grow."
“We show up fully, balancing care, curiosity, and high expectations while creating spaces where students feel seen, challenged, and supported."
"We model mindfulness, empathy, and courage, and we believe that who students are becoming matters just as much as what they are learning."
