Position Summary:
The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation and management of campus safety and security programs including, but not limited to, security, fire safety, emergency management, parking management, traffic control, monitoring of closed caption security system, and building/campus access control. The work may include light cleaning, grounds, and maintenance work when necessary. The individual must be able to work efficiently and effectively through multiple tasks. This role calls for a proactive, solutions-oriented individual willing to work hard to ensure Gill St. Bernard’s School has secure and safe facilities. The Campus Safety Officer must be collegial with students, families, employees, and guests. In performing the duties of the position, the individual must comply with the Faculty/Staff Guidelines, as amended from time to time, and with other regulations and directives of the Director of Campus Safety and Emergency
Management, the Chief Financial Officer, the Head of School, and other administrative officials. This position requires the ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Security
- Responsible for campus safety by monitoring, patrolling and observing the grounds and all buildings.
- Interacts with students, families, employees, and guests in a respectful and collegial manner while ensuring maximum safety and security of the campus and buildings.
- Implements public safety and emergency management procedures and policies.
- Assists in managing all fire, lockdown, evacuation, and safety drills.
- Responsible for traffic and parking control during dop off, pick up, and campus events.
- Monitors after school activities for security and safety related issues.
- Monitors campus for security and safety concerns before and after the school day.
- Locks and unlocks all gates and doors as needed.
- Patrols campus monitoring activities for adherence to all GSB policies and procedures.
- Monitors occasional evening and weekend activities.
- Regular work hours are 11 am – 7 pm and are subject to change upon the School’s needs.
Maintenance
- Performs custodial, maintenance, and grounds duties as assigned and when needed.
Health and Safety
- Maintains a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all duties.
- Promotes the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in school buildings and on campus. This will include arrival and dismissal duties.
- Participates as part of the School’s Emergency Management Team under the direction of the Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management.
- On call when emergencies arise to prevent disruption of the School. (This may include nights and weekends.)
- Keeps abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
- Adheres to all School health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan, all OSHA regulations, and the Asbestos Management Plan.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES
- Ensures that all activities on campus conform to School requirements.
- Ability to operate access control, CCTV, and other security systems.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the School and the School community.
- Safely operates all equipment and machinery, as necessary.
- Reacts to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Operates in a team environment effectively interacting with security, maintenance, grounds, and farm personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management, Director of Facilities and Operations, Chief Financial Officer, and the Head of School.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Must be collegial, demonstrate excellent follow through.

- Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and emergency management protocols and procedures.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.

- Ability to communicate with individuals and groups.
- CPR/AED certifications preferred.
- Requires prolonged sitting, standing, and walking.
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching
- Requires climbing, balancing, and use of ladders, lifts, and scaffolding.
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, which may include some evenings and weekends.
- Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors with appropriate PPE.
- Must be able to work in high places such as rooftops and ceilings.
- Proficient computer skills including access control, CCTV, and other security systems.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree preferred with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in safety, security, or law enforcement.
- Ability to use a computer, email, smart phone, walkie-talkie, and CCTV security.
- Ability to read product labels and assembly instructions.
- Ability to read and implement material safety data sheets (MSDS).
- Maintain a valid New Jersey driver’s license and qualify to drive under the School’s insurance when driving a School vehicle.
- Experience in a school setting is preferred.
