Job Summary: Upper School Humanities at Day School encompasses Social Studies (SS) and English Language Arts (ELA) for grades 6 through 12. In 2026-2027, this role will focus primarily on teaching ELA to students in grades 6-9, SS to grades 6-7, and AP Seminar to sophomores. Day School’s Humanities Department embraces a variety of texts and media to reach our diverse student population and foster a global perspective. A successful teacher in this position understands the unique demands of working at an independent school and is passionate about the School’s Mission and Portrait of a Graduate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach five sections of humanities courses in the upper school..
Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement an effective, engaging, and meaningful Upper School Humanities scope and sequence that is vertically and horizontally aligned.
Employ inclusive and innovative instructional and assessment methods.
Create a warm and well-structured learning environment with consistent routines and high expectations that encourages and supports intellectual risk-taking and growth.
Provide timely individualized feedback to students.
Communicate proactively with families.
Serve as an advisor to upper school students.
Supervise students as assigned by Division Head.
Contribute to the life of Day School by coaching and/or leading student clubs and activities.
Be a visible presence at upper school events.
Actively participate in the Humanities department.
Actively participate in faculty meetings and professional development.
Model a commitment to lifelong learning and growth.
Uphold Day School’s Mission and core values.
Other duties may be assigned by the Head of School or Division Director.
Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree, preferred.
Experience teaching advanced level ELA and SS, preferred.
Ability to teach Spanish or Latin, a plus.
Knowledgeable about the developmental needs of upper school students (grades 6-12).
Knowledgeable about ELA and SS instruction.
Demonstrated ability to inspire students.
Exceptional written and oral skills.
