The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through Grade 12 college preparatory school of approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Our vibrant learning environment draws students from all over the city. Admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.
The Berkeley Carroll Middle School seeks an inspirational and passionate Humanities Leave Replacement Teacher to join from October to April of the 2026-27 school year. Curiosity, resilience, discernment, empathy, and an abiding interest in the special qualities of middle schoolers—as well as direct teaching experience with this age group—are essential. Our Middle School covers Grades 5-8.
The Humanities program, although heavily reliant on a framework of history and literature, draws widely from religion, philosophy, social science, arts, geography, and ethics to provide context and meaning. At each grade level, the curriculum fosters growth in skill development, ranging from reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary to the ability to think, verbally communicate, and write analytically and acutely about challenging issues. Collaboration, alignment, and reflection are important values for the Humanities Department and our Middle School program. Our community is deeply invested in the work of restorative practices, and our faculty are expected to contribute to the ongoing development in this area.
Responsibilities:
Plan and teach two sections of double periods of Humanities classes.
Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that meets the developmental needs of middle school students.
Regularly assess and report student learning and growth, providing timely and meaningful feedback.
Collaborate with members of the Humanities Department to create lesson plans and develop curriculum, ensuring that Berkeley Carroll’s Portrait of a Learner—its essential skills and habits of mind—is consistently cultivated.
Communicate effectively and proactively with students, colleagues, and families regarding student progress and wellbeing.
Participate actively in the life of the school, including faculty meetings, professional development, department meetings, leading an advisory, and community events.
Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the Humanities program and broader school mission.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred
Commitment to reflective practice, ongoing professional growth, and continuous improvement
Collegiality, an ability to listen, and a commitment to a supportive community that strives to honor diversity in every aspect
Strong organizational, collaboration, and teamwork skills
High level of cultural competency and a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion
Berkeley Carroll is committed to creating an environment that includes a diversity of perspectives and to cultivating an equitable, inclusive learning community in which everyone has a true sense of belonging. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to these values are especially encouraged to apply.
Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this position is $72K-$100K and will be prorated for the time worked in the 2026-27 academic year.
