At The Woodward School for Girls, we have been educating and empowering young women in grades 6–12 since 1894. Position Overview
The Learning Specialist supports students in developing the academic, organizational, and executive functioning skills necessary for success in a rigorous and supportive school environment. This individual works directly with students who may require additional academic support and collaborates closely with teachers, advisors, and families to ensure appropriate implementation of accommodations and learning strategies.
The ideal candidate has a background in special education, strong knowledge of learning differences and executive functioning, and the ability to build positive relationships with students while partnering effectively with faculty.
Responsibilities
Student Support
Provide individualized and small-group academic support for students in grades 6-12.
Help students strengthen executive functioning skills including organization, time management, planning, prioritization, task initiation, note-taking, and study strategies.
Support students in developing self-advocacy skills and academic confidence.
Monitor student progress and maintain communication regarding goals and strategies.
Assist students in understanding and effectively utilizing accommodations.
Teacher Collaboration
Partner with teachers to support students with documented accommodations and learning needs.
Provide guidance on instructional strategies, differentiation, classroom supports, and executive functioning approaches.
Assist faculty in interpreting and implementing accommodation plans consistently.
Collaborate with advisors, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
Participate in student support meetings and contribute to discussions regarding interventions and strategies.
Family Communication
Communicate with families regarding student progress, strategies, and areas for growth as appropriate.
Serve as a resource for parents regarding executive functioning and academic support strategies.
Additional Responsibilities
Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
Stay informed on best practices related to learning differences, executive functioning, and student support services.
Contribute to a collaborative and student-centered school culture.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, Educational Psychology, or related field preferred.
Background and experience in special education or student support services.
Knowledge of executive functioning strategies and learning differences.
Experience working with middle and high school students is preferred.
Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to build supportive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations.
Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and inclusive educational practices.
