English instruction in the TGS Middle School focuses on several strands of instruction: reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, and research. The curriculum spirals through these four content areas as students progress from fifth through eighth grade. Middle School English teachers collaborate frequently to make sure that their lessons and concepts align vertically, as well as ensuring that the curriculum adapts to the rapidly changing middle school student.
Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the scope of literature appropriate for middle school students; show proficiency in personal writing and communication skills; understand best practices for teaching literacy skills; stay current on educational trends and research in the ELA field; employ effective classroom management techniques; and relate easily and comfortably with the middle school child. Because middle school students develop at different speeds, candidates should be skilled at differentiating instruction to meet the variety of needs of students in heterogeneously grouped classrooms.
The successful candidate will collaborate with fellow English colleagues in both the Upper and Middle schools by contributing valuably as the department seeks to grow and meet the needs of all students. Candidates will also work to collaborate with other Middle School colleagues, especially in the social studies department, to contribute to a humanities-centered curriculum. Creating unique and engaging Friday explorations is also a vital part of the job of MS English teacher.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging lessons that follow the scope and sequence of the Middle School English curriculum.
Employ effective classroom management techniques while fostering a positive environment both in and out of the classroom by developing personal relationships with students, fellow faculty members and staff.
Collaborate with MS English and history colleagues to be sure that lessons are aligned and meet all of the core competencies determined by each department.
Assign meaningful work that helps students grow in their literary skills, making sure that assignments are graded and that feedback is provided in a timely manner.
Communicate with parents, advisors and administration about student struggles and successes.
Create and lead at least three explorations each Friday.
Volunteer for an appropriate number of supervision duties outside of classroom teaching blocks.
Advise a group of 10 - 13 students.
Qualifications - Candidates will have:
Bachelor’s degree in a humanities related field.
Demonstrated experience working with middle school students.
Teacher certification preferred.
Personal integrity and ability to work well with people.
Strong communication, organizational and technology skills.
