Newtown Friends School seeks a creative, forward-thinking educator to lead our newly designed Innovation Space. This teacher will build and lead an engaging, hands-on program in coding, robotics, engineering, design thinking, and STEAM for students in Grades PreK–8.
The Innovation Teacher will design curriculum from the ground up, creating developmentally appropriate learning experiences that foster curiosity, problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience. Students will explore programming (e.g., Scratch, Python), robotics platforms (LEGO, VEX), circuits and electronics, 3D design and printing, digital storytelling, media production, and applied engineering challenges. In addition, students will engage with emerging technologies, including age-appropriate exploration of artificial intelligence and digital citizenship. The goal is not simply technical fluency, but thoughtful engagement — helping students understand how to use technology ethically, responsibly, and creatively.
As we enter our final year of candidacy for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), this role will collaborate closely with classroom teachers to integrate innovation into Units of Inquiry, support transdisciplinary learning, and help students apply conceptual understanding through inquiry, action, and real-world problem-solving. In addition, the Innovation Teacher will lead math enrichment groups in Grades 3–5, providing rich problem-solving experiences and conceptual extensions aligned with our Math in Focus program. Prior experience with Singapore Math is not required; however, strong mathematical reasoning skills and a willingness to learn the program are essential.
We seek an educator who is:
Experienced in teaching coding, robotics, engineering, or STEAM
Skilled in inquiry-based and project-based learning
Comfortable designing and implementing curriculum independently
An ongoing learner who welcomes feedback and growth
Collaborative, collegial, and eager to work alongside faculty
Energized by building a new program within a progressive school setting
The ideal candidate understands that innovation is not just about technology — it is about cultivating thinkers, designers, and ethical problem-solvers. At Newtown Friends School, innovation is grounded in our commitment to inclusion, intellectual curiosity, and responsible engagement with the world. We are looking for a teacher who is excited to help students create, experiment, reflect, and grow in a joyful, purposeful learning environment.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline is required. An advanced degree is desired. The successful candidate will have excellent rapport with and knowledge of elementary and upper school students and enjoy working with them in a variety of school activities in addition to classroom teaching. Candidates should have a desire to mentor and support students' development of the necessary academic, social, and attitudinal skills to achieve 21st-Century leadership. Candidates should be ready to engage in helping the school to achieve its goal of being an anti-racist institution with broad DEIJB goals. Familiarity with Responsive Classroom and Quaker education is advantageous.
