The Allen-Stevenson School, founded in 1883, is a TK-8 independent school for boys with an enrollment of over 350 students. Located in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, the school is a joyful, inclusive community.
Position Overview
The Allen-Stevenson School seeks a Lower Division Associate Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The successful candidate will work to build an inclusive classroom, integrate technology, and demonstrate high energy, flexibility, and creativity. An understanding and appreciation of how boys learn best, especially the role that personal connection plays, is an essential part of this role. We believe boys thrive in structured, nurturing, engaging, and responsive environments that meet their developmental needs. Our Lower Division faculty work collaboratively to create classrooms where curiosity, kindness, and confidence flourish. This position reports directly to the Head of Lower Division, will be based in a Lower Division classroom (grades K-2), and will provide instructional and administrative support to a Head Teacher.
Salary Range and Position Type
This full-time position starts on or around August 24, 2026, and is eligible for benefits.
Compensation: $52,000-$62,000, commensurate with education and experience.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Support & Classroom Management
Classroom Environment: Provide students with a socially and emotionally safe and supportive learning environment.
Student Supervision: Support the Head Teacher in managing and supervising students to ensure a productive learning atmosphere.
Instructional Delivery: Assist the Head Teacher in planning and implementing high-quality instruction across all subject areas.
Assessment: Help to assess and document student progress to inform future instruction.
Goal Setting: With Head Teacher support, create clear learning goals, expectations, and standards for student work.
Curriculum & Team Collaboration
Curriculum Development: Collaborate with the grade-level team to develop engaging curricula and lessons across various subjects.
Professional Synergy: Share ideas and skills with colleagues while remaining open to different perspectives and teaching styles.
Team Integration: Establish and maintain cooperative, positive relationships with all faculty and staff members.
Family & Student Engagement
Relationship Building: Maintain positive personal relationships with all students and their families to foster a strong home-school connection.
Communication: Establish a proactive and positive working relationship with the Head Teacher to ensure consistent classroom leadership.
Professionalism & Administrative Responsibilities
Growth Mindset: Continue to acquire new knowledge and implement educational best practices; maintain a consistently positive attitude.
Meeting Attendance: Attend all scheduled grade-level, parent, and schoolwide meetings.
Operational Excellence: Demonstrate strong organizational skills, including consistent punctuality.
General Support: Carry out other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower Division and the Assistant Head of Lower Division.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
An understanding of and desire to learn more about how boys learn best.
Strong organizational skills (planning, record keeping, emails).
Experience working with young children in an academic setting.
A commitment to building an equitable and inclusive classroom and school community.
Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.
Experience with teaching online and/or have experience with online learning tools (Seesaw, Zoom, Google, Clever, etc.).
Ability to support Head Teacher in the social-emotional and academic growth of boys.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, in-person role. Individuals in this role are expected to be on-site between the hours of 7:45am-3:45pm, Monday-Friday, during the school year. Attendance at some after-hours events, such as Back-to-School Night and the Celebration of Learning, among others, is expected. The role follows the school academic calendar which begins in mid August and ends in mid June.
