The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Browning is searching for a full-time Grades 3-5 Learning Specialist in Literacy to work in our Lower School for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $75,000-115,000, commensurate with experience. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
The Grades 3-5 Learning Specialist in Literacy is responsible for supporting students who have specific learning needs in the areas of reading and writing in order to build their overall literacy skills and ensure academic growth across subject areas. Working with students in a small-group model, as well as pushing into homeroom classrooms, the Grades 3-5 Learning Specialist in Literacy will collaborate with the Student Support Team, teachers, and families to develop and work towards literacy goals for individual students. The Grades 3-5 Learning Specialist in Literacy will provide periodic assessments to best target each boy’s learning needs and track data in making progress towards his goals. A successful Grades 3-5 Learning Specialist in Literacy will bring expertise in their field, experience in providing targeted intervention, and a belief in and desire for growth of all their students.
Among other things, they are tasked with:
Providing regular and on-going small group instruction and support in reading and writing to boys in Grades 3-5
Providing learning support to individual students to ensure academic growth across the curriculum
Teaching a weekly class in each Grade 4 and Grade 5 homeroom focused on Studentship, including organizational, executive function, and study skills
Conducting literacy screenings and assessments for boys in Grades 3-5
Tracking student progress through goal-setting and data collection
Organizing and leading the implementation of MAP testing in Grades 3-5
Providing push-in intervention writing support in Grades 3-5 homerooms
Collaborating with the Lower School Student Support Team and teachers to integrate literacy goals into classroom activities
Communicating with families about student needs, goals, and progress
Coordinating with outside providers working with students on literacy and learning goals
Leading communication with families, outside providers, and/or the Department of Education regarding implementation of recommendations from neuropsychological evaluations and IESPs
Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty
Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
Heartily contributing to the school community

Familiarity with Wilson Fundations, The Writing Revolution/Hochman Method, MAP testing, and/or other reading and writing intervention methods is highly preferred.
