Shady Hill School is looking for a 2nd Grade Teacher (Gradehead) to join our Lower School team beginning in Fall 2026. At Shady Hill, Lower School Gradeheads are responsible for age appropriate language arts/literature, social studies/history, and mathematics instruction for their classroom. For 2nd grade, each classroom has 1 Gradehead and ~17 students. Gradeheads are supported by a grade level Reading Specialist, and Department Teachers who are responsible for instruction in Library, Movement, Science, Music and Art. This is a full-time, in-person, exempt (salaried), 10 month position (late August - mid June).
Specific Gradehead Responsibilities:
Teach the year-long, grade level assigned Thematic Study / Central Subject which integrates instruction in language and literature, mathematics, science, music and art
Grade 2: The Charles River
Teach mathematics using the Illustrative Math curriculum with a focus on building student understanding
Work closely and collaboratively with grade level team and department teachers to shape and refine curriculum
Manage all classroom responsibilities, including implementing curriculum, differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners, utilizing a variety of approaches to teaching and assessing students
Communicate regularly about student progress by writing reports, holding conferences with parents/guardians and meeting with other faculty and administrators to support the needs of individuals
Monitor the social and emotional wellbeing, and academic achievement of students
Engage in professional development to enhance inclusive teaching and leadership practices
In addition, Lower School Gradeheads share in responsibilities associated with the position or with membership on the faculty including supervision of student activities, participating in special events and outreach programs, as well as lunch and recess supervision. Gradeheads are also expected to attend opening and closing meetings (August/September and June) and other faculty meetings as scheduled and to serve on committees of the faculty.
At least three years of prior elementary classroom teaching experience preferred
Familiarity with integrated learning through a thematic approach
Demonstrated knowledge of emerging literacy, accomplished-reader skills and the craft of writing
Experience in helping children to construct mathematical knowledge through conceptually-based mathematics instruction that uses manipulatives and a problem-solving approach
Effective, timely, and professional communication skills
Employs multicultural, anti-bias, and anti-racist teaching strategies and materials that reflect cultural competence
Finalists will be expected to teach a demonstration lesson and provide a writing sample. The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $105,000. Annual salary for faculty is determined according to a step scale commensurate with experience.
