Steamboat Mountain School’s Teaching Faculty afford students active learning opportunities to engage through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The goal of the school is to foster confident, empathetic, and global learners who strive to engage genuinely with other people.
We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Upper School Spanish Teacher for the 2026–27 school year. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Assistant Head of School and responsible for developing curriculum, designing lessons, and engaging students in high-quality language learning. Candidates should be experienced in differentiated instruction so that each student has the opportunity to do work that is appropriately challenging. The ideal candidate has experience teaching high school–aged students and demonstrates a strong commitment to culturally responsive, acquisition-driven, and student-centered instruction.
Upper School Spanish courses emphasize communication, cultural competence, and global perspectives. Our Spanish program is designed around comprehensible input principles, prioritizing proficiency, and communication. We use the SOMOS curriculum, along with a variety of supplemental lessons and materials, to support students in acquiring authentic listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. The successful candidate will be comfortable implementing an acquisition-driven curriculum that supports a range of proficiency levels and encourages risk-taking, collaboration, and curiosity.
Specific job responsibilities include:
Create units and lesson plans that prioritize student engagement and individual needs using student-centered, inquiry-based, and communicative approaches.
Design and deliver Spanish instruction that emphasizes proficiency-based learning and cultural competence.
Employ a variety of teaching methods and differentiated instruction to engage a range of learners.
Maintain accurate records of student growth and communicate progress with students and families.
Create a classroom culture that is inclusive, engaging, student-centered, and effectively managed.
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure curricular alignment and cohesion across grade levels.
Participate in and lead outdoor education trips throughout the year.
Fulfill residential duties as assigned.
Potentially lead an international trip for a month in the spring.
Attend faculty meetings and maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school as well as through self-selected professional growth activities.
Attend start-of-school meetings and end-of-year school meetings.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Assistant Head of School.
Teaching Faculty are eligible to take non-work days during traditional school holidays as listed in the school’s official calendar and separate from paid sick leave, but only as professional responsibilities allow.
Minimum of 6 years of experience teaching Spanish, preferably at the high school level.
Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
Master’s degree preferred.
Demonstrated experience with student-centered, collaborative, and communicative language teaching methodologies.
Interest in outdoor education and project-based learning.
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, the ability and desire to work collaboratively, and dedication to continuously developing and practicing cultural competence in one’s teaching.
