St. George’s Episcopal School is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic and creative Early Childhood Teacher to work in a one, two or pre-kindergarten three-year-old classroom. St. George’s is seeking candidates who demonstrate a growth mindset and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Candidates who are organized, patient, flexible, warm, energetic and engaging are likely to be successful team members at St. George’s.The classroom teacher will work alongside another full-time co-lead teacher and in some cases, an assistant or small group instructor. Classroom teachers take on all responsibilities of the classroom and are responsible for mentoring and guiding assistant classroom teachers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Complies with all state licensing and health and safety requirements and adheres to staff-to-child ratios and supervision guidelines at all times
Maintains accurate attendance, incident reports and required documentation
Maintains a safe, organized, clean and developmentally appropriate classroom environment
Prepares, rotates and cares for classroom materials
Implements rich, child-centered, project-based learning through the Project Approach emergent curriculum, honoring children’s interests and exploration across subject areas
Sets learning goals integrated within a child-centered curriculum for each child and develops appropriately challenging experiences to meet the needs of all students
Demonstrates an ability and willingness to differentiate instruction
Collaborates with their co-teacher to plan lessons each week
Understands the environment they create is an important teaching tool
Listens carefully to students and reflects on and documents children’s processes and work, maintaining records of progress, routines and interests
Uses observation and documentation to inform curriculum planning
Contributes to written assessments, progress reports and family conferences and participates in internal assessment systems or portfolios
Uses developmentally appropriate guidance and respectful, positive behavior support strategies
Supports children’s emotional regulation, conflict resolution and emerging independence
Shows dedication to supporting the social, emotional and character development of each child
Displays a warm and nurturing character that supports strong connections with children and families
Supports children with diverse developmental needs, abilities and backgrounds and demonstrates culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices
Partners with specialists (speech, OT, EI, etc.) as needed
Communicates effectively with parents and establishes a collaborative, team-based approach with families
Communicates daily with families via the school’s Early Childhood communication app and once or twice monthly with families via newsletters
Prepares meals and organizes mealtimes and snacks for children
Assists children with diapering, potty training and hygiene routines, including handwashing
Develops a schedule that ensures students have adequate physical activity, rest and playtime
Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective teaching practices
Participates in staff meetings, trainings, team duties as assigned (e.g. carpool duty) and school-wide initiatives
Works collaboratively as an active, supportive member of the age-level team
Assists with one school-organized weekend event and participates in after-hours activities such as parent-teacher conferences
Collaborates with the Admissions team by supporting applicant visits, play dates and applicant feedback forms
Proactively shares highlights of and calendar invites for noteworthy classroom activities, projects and guest experiences with the Marketing and Communications Office to inform school communications and marketing efforts
Maintains open communication with the Director of Auxiliary Programs to support After Care programming.
Contributes positively to a collaborative, respectful and professional school culture
Communicates effectively with administrators and support staff
Qualification Requirements
Bachelor's degree required; degree in early childhood or elementary education preferred
1-2 years of experience working with young children
Experience with or appreciation for project/constructivist learning approach and the Reggio Emilia philosophy and an ability to integrate real-life learning experiences into the curriculum
Experience working in a teaching team; positive attitude and eager to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues in developing curriculum and planning for instruction
Strong interest in pursuing professional development opportunities and dedicated to lifelong learning and possessing a growth mindset
Desire to work with children who display a variety of different abilities and needs
Proficiency in Google Workspace applications including but not limited to Gmail, Calendar and Drive (Docs, Sheets and Slides)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work with parents, children and coworkers
A desire to respond to and initiate the solving of problems through clear and open conversation
Openness to feedback, coaching and supervision
Ability to use an online student information system, various educational platforms such as Canva and safety/communication applications on a Chromebook, iPad and/or a smartphone
A sense of integrity, ethics and ability to carry out responsibilities in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures
Working Conditions / Physical Demands:
Must be physically able to operate computers and office equipment
Occasional bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling and twisting; constant walking, speaking and listening; close visual attention to the computer
