Position Summary
We are seeking an Upper School English teacher to join our academic community and cultivate students’ intellectual curiosity and love for learning through meaningful relationships. We are seeking an enthusiastic, student-centered educator who is passionate about inspiring students to engage with a range of literary texts, and committed to fostering their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The successful candidate will teach grades 9 and 10 and must have an affection for students in this age group, an understanding of their needs and energy, and a willingness to work collaboratively with employees, administration, and parents.
The recent addition of The Studios – three academic and creative spaces offering virtual reality, podcasting, and XR film technology – make this an exciting time to join our humanities faculty.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide innovative, comprehensive, and content-rich instruction designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills within the context of a largely canonical curriculum.
Plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the curriculum and ensure breadth and balance in all subjects and skills, including reading, writing, speech, vocabulary, and grammar.
Establish an engaging, student-centered, discussion-driven, and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and active engagement. We are a school that believes deeply in Mind, Brain, and Education science (MBE) practices, annually supports faculty professional development in this area, and is a partner school with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL).
Create varied classroom activities designed to foster student-centered learning.
Offer individualized writing instruction with emphasis on language, rhetoric, and structure.
Create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful, and stimulating environment which is conducive to student’s learning.
Identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenges and high expectations.
Mentor and develop student relationships by establishing and maintaining positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students, understanding and responding to their individual needs.
Maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping, and reporting of student’s progress.
Contribute to the development and coordination of the Department’s curriculum.
Communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their children’s education – academic, social, and emotional.

Qualifications
Bachelor degree in English; advanced degree preferred.
Teaching certificate not necessary but favorably considered.
Experience teaching literature, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar to ninth and tenth grade students (9th is genre-focused and 10th is American Literature).
Proficient and enthusiastic user of technology.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Professional collegiality, a desire to grow, and enthusiasm for young people.
Preference to candidates with athletic coaching experience or expressed willingness to coach or direct activities, including Journalism/Newspaper.

The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond.
