The Lower School
Guided by the mission of the school and Rowland Hall’s strategic plan, the Lower School is a place of joyful learning. The Lower School faculty is composed of caring and knowledgeable teachers who are passionate about elementary education, skillful in creating learning environments in which young students can thrive, and committed to continuous and collaborative professional growth. Lower School teachers, students, and families value the strong sense of community established in grades 1-5, and the unique learning experiences that the school provides each student, via the classroom curriculum, through our Specialties Program (Science, TREC, Art, Music, PE, Spanish, Library), and in our Ethical Education and Social-Emotional Learning Program.
Position Summary
The Lower School seeks an Assistant Teacher to join our Teaching Team. The Assistant Teacher collaborates with lead teachers in creating a warm, joyful, and organized classroom community, establishing routines and building relationships with children and families.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Collaborates with lead teachers in planning, execution, and assessment of the curriculum.
Collaborates with the Student Support Team (Division Heads, Emotional Support Counselor, Director of Learning Services, Learning Specialist) to support each child and collaborate with families.
Under the guidance of lead teachers, conducts activities with large and small groups of children, or with individuals.
Uses positive guidance, offering children plenty of helpful feedback, and exhibiting patience, empathy, and respect.
Collaborates with lead teachers in the assessment of learners, as well as preparation for parent-teacher conferences, progress reports, and other communications on students’ learning.
Supervise students during daily transitions, recess, lunch, and in specialty spaces, helping to maintain a safe, consistent, and developmentally appropriate environment.
Possibility of delivering weekly social/emotional curricular lessons in collaboration with the Emotional Support Counselor.
Engages in the professional learning community at Rowland Hall by attending all required meetings, attending workshops/conferences to improve practice, and participating in the process of teacher evaluation in collaboration with the Assistant Head of Lower School.
Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Lower School program
Skills and Requirements

Knowledge of developmentally-appropriate practices with young learners

Proficient computer skills, as well as strong oral and solid written communication skills
An openness to making mistakes and trying new things
Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced by professionalism and sound judgment
A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Elementary Education or a related field
Successful teaching experience with young children is preferred.

Additional Information
This is a full-time exempt position, reporting to the Head of Lower School. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026. Compensation is based on level of education and years of relevant experience.
