Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) seeks an experienced humanities teacher for full-time employment from approximately current through May 29, 2026 as a long-term substitute for integrated American Studies and Honors American Studies courses (4 sections). This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with an excellent background in American History, American Literature, and writing instruction to work with excellent eleventh-grade students in an active classroom environment that embraces discussion-based learning, critical thinking, and research. The LCDS American Studies courses are interdisciplinary Humanities courses that meet the discipline-specific objectives of English (writing instruction, literary analysis, grammar, etc.) and history (primary source analysis, models and patterns, awareness of historiography, content knowledge, etc.). Candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and LCDS Employment Application to tarvinb@lancastercountryday.org. Responsibilities of the position include: ? Teach one double-block of American Studies (equivalent to two sections). ? Teach one double-block of Honors American Studies (equivalent to two sections). ? Proctor one or two study halls. ? Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a consistent student experience in instruction, expectations, and assessments. ? Grading assignments, providing timely and constructive feedback, and maintaining an accurate gradebook. ? Write reports that evaluate student performance, offer accurate comments to families, and complete end-of-term grades. ? Organizes classroom systems/procedures and manages student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning. ? Establish a culture of high expectations and support for all students. ? Desired Qualifications: ? Bachelor’s degree in history, English, or related humanities area; Master’s degree preferred. ? Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and/or arts integration is also preferred. ? Familiarity with Harkness Learning and/or Socratic Seminars is helpful ? At least three years of teaching experience preferred, ideally in an independent school setting. ? Desire to be part of building the larger school culture and community, particularly with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts." ? Ability to organize classroom systems/procedures and manage student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning.
