The Upper School English Teacher plays an integral role in delivering engaging, rigorous, and student-centered instruction in literature, writing, and critical thinking. This position supports the academic and social-emotional development of students and is responsible for building meaningful connections between texts, ideas, student voice, and the broader mission of the school. The ideal candidate is an innovative educator with experience fostering a dynamic, discussion-rich, and inclusive learning environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Teaching & Instruction
Deliver high-quality instruction in English courses ranging from 9th Grade Literature & Composition to upper-level electives, with the potential to teach AP or specialized courses as needed.
Use student-centered teaching strategies that promote close reading, analytical and creative writing, critical thinking, and rich classroom discussion.
Integrate diverse literary voices, real-world connections, and interdisciplinary themes into the curriculum where appropriate.
Implement varied formative and summative assessments to evaluate student learning, provide meaningful feedback, and adjust instruction accordingly.
Maintain an organized, engaging, and supportive classroom environment that fosters student voice, curiosity, and confidence as readers, writers, and thinkers.
Regularly collaborate with grade-level and departmental colleagues to ensure curricular alignment, progression, and a coherent 9–12 English program.
Uphold the tenets of the English Department’s philosophy of learning.
Student Support & Engagement
Foster a supportive classroom climate that promotes student voice, respect, and academic growth.
Serve as a grade-level advisor or SEA Term (St. Margaret’s Exploration Academy – experiential education) instructor, supporting the academic and social-emotional needs of students.
Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and families regarding progress and achievement.
Communicate clearly and consistently with students, families, and colleagues.
Professional Responsibilities
Participate in school-wide events, division meetings, professional development opportunities, and committee work.
Engage in reflective practice and remain current in pedagogical trends and educational best practices.
Collaborate with colleagues across divisions to support student learning and advance strategic initiatives.
Uphold the mission and core values of the school in all professional interactions.
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
Bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field.
3+ years of full-time classroom teaching experience.
Strong instructional skills with proven classroom management and communication abilities.
Comfort with educational technology and innovative teaching practices.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a team-based environment.
Preferred
Master’s degree in English, English education, or a related field.
Clear California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English.
Experience teaching grades 9–12.
Experience in independent schools.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Salary Range: $73,000 - $100,000

The Upper School English Teacher must be able to work in a classroom environment that includes long periods of sitting, standing, and moving around. The role requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and engage in daily campus movement, including navigating stairs and outdoor spaces. The teacher must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English and demonstrate visual and auditory acuity to interact with students and staff. Work may involve occasional evening or weekend responsibilities to support school events, student activities, or professional development.
