Projected Dates of Employment: March 30, 2026-June 30, 2026
Friends Community School (FCS), founded in 1986, is a progressive, co-ed Quaker K-8 day school serving a diverse student body from the greater Washington, D.C. area. FCS’s LEED-certified building is situated on 17 acres surrounded by Greenbelt National Park, nine minutes from the University of Maryland, College Park, and thirty minutes from Washington, D.C.
Educators at FCS nurture lifelong learners, courageous risk takers, and joyous peacemakers through the expression of our commitments to Quakerism, Progressive Education, equity, and inclusion. Our progressive pedagogical approach emphasizes depth over breadth, creativity and innovation over memorization, and hands-on collaborative projects over rote schoolwork. Our curriculum engages students in the exploration of values rooted in our Quaker Heritage – simplicity, peaceful conflict resolution, integrity, community, equality/equity, and stewardship – from a range of perspectives.
Job Summary
Friends Community School seeks a part-time Communications Associate for at least three months beginning March 30, 2026. Primary responsibilities of the role will include collecting and editing content for a weekly online publication for families, capturing and documenting classroom activities for social media, supporting the creation and publication of our spring advancement campaign, and otherwise supporting the day-to-day communications of the school and assisting with various communications projects as needed. The person in this role will work closely with the Advancement and Admissions offices and will collaborate and communicate with all employees to understand upcoming events and schedule opportunities to capture and communicate stories within the community.
Due to the need to document in-person classes and events in real-time, the person in this role should expect to be on campus at least 10-15 hours per week, with flexibility around the timing of those hours based on what events are happening.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Communicate the school’s mission, progressive educational approach, commitment to equity, and Quaker values through internal and external communication vehicles.
Produce the Weekly Bulletin, the school’s newsletter, by gathering content from faculty and staff and managing the layout and design process.
Photograph/gather video content of progressive learning in action, special and regular events, and daily school life.
Create compelling content for and maintain the school’s social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn).
Collaborate with colleagues in telling the story of the school for content distribution (for example, connecting with teachers regarding classroom highlights).
Support specific projects (e.g., advancement campaigns, school-wide events) as needed.
Participate in weekly staff meetings, as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Commitment to Diversity
FCS is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational community and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or a person's status as a qualified candidate with a disability in administration of its educational program, admission policies, financial aid program, staff hiring, and other school-administered programs.
