Job Summary:
The ELC Music, Movement, and Drama Teacher provides engaging, developmentally appropriate arts instruction for students in preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten. Through music, creative movement, and dramatic play, this educator fosters creativity, confidence, and self-expression while supporting students’ social-emotional and cognitive development. The role introduces foundational music and performance concepts and creates a joyful, inclusive classroom environment where young learners feel encouraged to explore and collaborate. This educator also contributes to school performances, gatherings, and the broader life of the St. Thomas School (STS) community.
General Responsibilities:
Designs and delivers engaging, developmentally appropriate music, movement, and drama lessons for preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten students, aligned with early childhood milestones.
Teaches theater classes for elementary and middle school students, as needed.
Introduces foundational music concepts including rhythm, tempo, melody, and basic instrumentation.
Facilitates creative movement experiences that build coordination, spatial awareness, body control, and expressive confidence.
Incorporates storytelling, imaginative play, and dramatic exploration to support language development and creativity.
Contributes to the planning and execution of schoolwide theatrical and musical performances.
Assists with daily division and all-school morning gatherings.
Creates a classroom environment where young children feel safe to take risks, express themselves, and collaborate with peers.
Integrates opportunities for performance and sharing in ways that are joyful and inclusive.
Fosters students’ social-emotional growth by modeling positive communication, cooperation, and respectful participation.
Shares program highlights and student experiences with families on a regular basis.
Actively engages in the life of the school and contributes to community-wide events and programs.
Upholds and models the mission, values, and strategic priorities of STS.
Demonstrates respect for diverse perspectives and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Communicates effectively and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
Collaborates across departments and participates in grade level and division meetings to support a cohesive preschool through eighth grade experience.
Maintains confidentiality and handles sensitive information with discretion.
Adheres to school policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the Early Learning Center.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in music education, early childhood education, or a related field; master’s degree or teaching certification preferred.
3+ years of experience teaching music or performing arts to early childhood students (ages 3 – 6).
Expertise in developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood performing arts education; familiarity with Feierabend First Steps in Music and the Orff Schulwerk Approach preferred.
Experience designing engaging curriculum that balances structure, creativity, and exploration for young learners.
Strong understanding of child development and how music, movement, and dramatic play support early learning.
Comfort working with a range of age groups, including preschool through kindergarten and occasionally elementary or middle school students.
Ability to accompany or lead music instruction using piano or similar instruments preferred.
Capacity to move freely and actively participate in physical activities such as dancing, skipping, jumping, and other movement-based instruction.
Ability to project voice clearly and sustain vocal stamina throughout the school day.
Ability to actively supervise students both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions.
Physical ability to meet the demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 pounds and engaging in activities such as bending, crouching, or sitting on the ground.
Readiness to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and maintain throughout employment.
Successful completion of required background checks in accordance with school policy and state regulations.
Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, flexible, and growth-oriented mindset.
Sound professional judgment and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Proficiency with basic technology tools and a willingness to learn school-specific systems.
