Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college preparatory school of approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Our vibrant learning environment draws students from all over the city. Admission to the school is competitive and both our parents and students value achievement and community.
We are seeking a highly flexible maker, builder, and tinkerer - someone who loves the feel of materials in hand as much as the glow of a screen. The Lower School Technology & Design Coordinator is a thoughtful educator who views technology as one powerful tool among many in service of deeper learning. This role will shepherd Lower School students (grades 1-4) through the Berkeley Carroll Design Process (Think, Plan, Do, Review), guiding them to approach challenges with curiosity and creativity while building confidence in their ability to design and make. This position balances digital literacy, physical making, research skills, and imaginative problem-solving, creating pathways for students to explore and present their learning in whatever form serves their ideas best.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Planning
Serve as a thought partner to school leadership in strategic technology planning, bringing a grounded, child-development-centered perspective to decisions about tools, platforms, and the role of technology in the Lower School
Collaborate with the MS tech coordinator and all-school tech supervisor on logistics and curriculum alignment
Co-lead parent presentations on healthy technology use, the Design Lab philosophy, and the school's intentional approach to technology in childhood
Develop and maintain a coherent scope and sequence for Lower School technology instruction, ensuring foundational digital literacy and coding concepts that build skills, confidence, and creative problem-solving in alignment with all-school technology pathways to ensure PreK–12 continuity
Design Lab Leadership & Space Management
Plan, maintain, and evolve the Design Lab as an inviting, well-organized collaborative makerspace that supports student curiosity and hands-on learning
Curate and manage a materials library for teachers and students, sourcing and organizing supplies, tools, and resources that inspire building projects and creative exploration
Support faculty in bringing Design Lab experiences into integrated classroom projects, ensuring materials and tools are accessible and ready for collaborative, cross-disciplinary work
Teaching & Instruction
Teach Design Lab classes in the 2026-27 year that guide students through iterative design thinking, hands-on making with physical materials, and the Berkeley Carroll Design Process, weaving digital and analog tools with intentional balance
Deliver foundational technology instruction, establishing digital citizenship, basic computer skills, coding and robotics concepts, and a culture of thoughtful tech use
Work collaboratively with administration to reimagine a flexible instructional schedule that deepens cross-disciplinary integration over time
Curriculum Integration & Faculty Support
Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to identify and facilitate integrated, hands-on learning projects that bring together technology, design, research, and subject-area content
Work closely with the librarian to integrate information literacy, research skills, and critical evaluation across the curriculum, helping students find, synthesize, and present information for inquiry-based projects
Assist faculty in finding meaningful opportunities for technology integration, knowing when a tool serves learning and when analog approaches are more powerful
Recommend carefully curated apps, digital tools, and physical and print materials that genuinely support curricular goals and student learning
Tech Support
Provide day-to-day technology troubleshooting in the Lower School, ensuring devices, tools, and equipment in the Design Lab and classrooms are functioning and ready for use, and coordinate with IT staff as needed to resolve issues efficiently and minimize disruption to learning
Student Support
Support students with learning plans in accessing and using assistive technology, helping them build independence and confidence with tools that support their individual learning needs; collaborate with learning support staff to ensure these tools are integrated thoughtfully and consistently
Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Education, Library Science, Instructional Technology, or a related field
Head teaching experience in a Lower School classroom setting
Genuine comfort with hand tools and physical making, or a demonstrated eagerness to learn; you should feel as confident guiding students through a building project as you do teaching them to code
Real interest in and ability with STEM; a desire to learn how to use both new and old technologies in service of building, making, and problem-solving
A strong design sensibility, an eye for aesthetics, spatial thinking, and the way form and function work together, that you can translate into accessible, inspiring experiences for young learners
A creative imagination for how students can present, explore, and learn; comfort with open-ended making and multiple pathways to demonstrating understanding
Solid technology teaching skills and the ability to troubleshoot common hardware and software issues
Strong research skills and familiarity with information literacy instruction; library background not required but encouraged
Warm, patient manner with children; attention to detail; ability to manage logistics and support multiple learners working simultaneously, including those with complex learning profiles
Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, spaces, and collaborators simultaneously, while keeping materials, schedules, and logistics running smoothly
Alignment with Berkeley Carroll's Portrait of a Learner: demonstrated curiosity, empathy, resilience, and discernment
Ability to articulate and model a thoughtful, balanced approach to technology use, reassuring families that the Design Lab model prioritizes meaningful making over screen time
Berkeley Carroll is committed to creating an environment that includes a diversity of perspectives and to cultivating an equitable, inclusive learning community in which everyone has a true sense of belonging. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to these values are especially encouraged to apply.
Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this position is $72K-$110K.
